For Christmas, I thought about a small embroidered cussion for my grand-ma's pins. And I figured it would be ideal to try hook embroidery, which had tempted me since a demo I had seen years ago.

La première chose à faire a été de mettre en place mon tissu. J'ai récupéré un métier à broder de mon arrière grand-mère. L'avantage par rapport à un tambour, c'est que ça tient tout seul et qu'il me reste donc deux mains pour la broderie !
First thing to do was to put my fabric in place. I got a tapestry frame from my great grand mother. The huge advantage compared to a tambour is that it holds everything in place and frees up a hand for embroidery !
Une fois mes dessins épinglés sur mon tissu, j'ai marqué les angles pour avoir les mesures plus tard et être certaine de ne rien décaler.
Once my drawings were pinned on my fabric, I marked the corners to get the right measures later on and to be certain not to slide designs.
N'ayant jamais fait de broderie au crochet, rarement fait de broderie et ne trouvant aucun tuto approprié, j'ai dû faire des tests, à commencer par la taille du crochet.
Having never embroider with a hook, rarely embroidered at all and finding no appropriate tutorial, I had to test things out. First was the size of the hook.
En sélectionnant les crochets les plus fins de ma collection, j'avais 1.5, 1, taille inconnue nommée 26, 0.75 et 0.6, en taille décroissante. 1.5 et 1 passent à peine au travers du tissu donc leur cas était réglé facilement. Il restait donc 26, 0.75 et 0.6. J'ai fait quelques points de chaine avec chaque crochet et un fil de broderie.
The smaller hooks I had were decreasingly sized 1.5, 1, unknown size numbered 26, 0.75 and 0.6. they're all sized in mm. 1.5 and 1 hardly go through the fabric at all so they were ruled out quickly. 26, 0.75 and 0.6 were left. I did a few chain stitches with each hook and an embroidery thread.
Ça a été l'occasion de me confronter à la fermeture d'une chaine. J'ai mis un moment mais je pense que j'ai "découvert" la solution classique et en tout cas simplissime. Les étapes en image, une fois le fil coupé :
It was the occasion to confront myself to closing a chain. It did take me some time but I think I "discovered" the classic solution, and in any case, really simple. Steps in pictures, once thread is cut :
La taille du crochet ne change pas ou quasiment pas l'aspect de la chaine, j'ai donc choisi d'utiliser le plus fin. Par contre, par rapport à la taille de mes coussins, mes chaines étaient très épaisses. J'ai donc décidé de tester avec un fil classique, plus fin, histoire de voir si ça pouvait donner quelque chose d'intéressant.
The size of the hook does not much or not at all to change the look of the stitches so I decided to use the smallest hook. But compared to the size of my cussions, the stiches were really thick. I decided to try the same stitch with a regular thread (not embroidery, much thinner) in order to see if this could go somewhere.
J'ai pu essayer plusieurs longueurs de point pour voir les différents styles que ça pouvait donner. L'épaisseur était beaucoup plus adaptée.
I tried different length of stitch to see the different styles I could make like that. Thickness was much more adapted.
J'ai donc pu commencer le travail sur mes dessins ! Voilà quelques images :D

Comme vous pouvez le voir, la première tige n'a pas vraiment suivi le plan. En fait le départ était trop droit et chaque changement de direction avait l'air très très moche...
As you can see, the first stem isn't quite following the plan. The start of it was really straight and it made each little change ugly...
