Chose promise chose due, voilà mes poches XVIIIème finies, juste à temps pour le challenge n° 1 du HSM de cette année. Comme vous le savez peut-être, le challenge était « fondations ».
As I said I would, I did finish my 18th century pockets. Just in time for challenge #1 : Foundations of the HSM for this year.

Avant tout il me fallait du tissu. J'ai donc profité d'une après-midi libre pour mener une expédition dans les rues de Turin, à la recherche d'un tissu adéquate. C'est chez un tapissier que j'ai trouvé mon bonheur. Une "chute" de tissu en lin de 4 m par 1 pour 25 euros.
First of all I needed fabric. Torino's streets provided me with an upholsterer's workshop where I found what I needed. A coupon of 4*1m of striped linen fabric for 25 €.
Dans une petite mercerie, j'ai également trouvé un ruban en lin. À 90 centimes le mètre, j'en ai pris 2,50 m. Le total de mes fournitures m'a donc coûté 27€25, sachant qu'il me reste beaucoup de tissu.
In
a notion shop, I also found a linen ribbon for 90 cents per meter. 2.50 m
costed me to 2€25, which brings the total of my spendings to 27€25,
knowing that I have loads of fabric left.
En guise de patron, j'ai trouvé une forme de poche qui me plaisait et ai commencé mon découpage.
As a pattern, I found a shape of pocket I liked and started my cutting.
J'ai ensuite cousu les bords à la main, sauf le haut, puis j'ai retourné mes poches sur l'endroit. J'ai ensuite calculé la longueur d'incision que je voulais pour pouvoir y mettre mes mains, et mes avant-bras, sans souci.
I then sewed the sides by hand, but not the top, and turned my pockets outside in. I then calculated the length of cut I needed to put my hands without troubles in my pockets.Il a ensuite fallu découper l'incision et protéger son bord avec le ruban plié en deux.
Once the cut was made I needed to protect its edge with the ribbon.
La difficulté étant évidemment le bout de l'incision, j'y ai passé pas mal de temps.
The main difficulty coming from the far end of the cut, I spent quite some time on it.
Évidemment, pour avoir deux poches, il faut faire tout ce travail deux fois.
Of course, in order to have two pockets you need to do that work twice.
Le haut des poches n'est pour le moment pas fermé, mais nous prendrons soin de cette étape en cousant le ruban qui va également servir à les accrocher autour de la taille. Cette couture sera faite de la même façon que celle qui a servi à accrocher le ruban sur les bords de l'incision, et toujours à la main.
The top of the pockets is not yet closed, i will take care of this while sewing the ribbon which is also going to be tied around the waist. I will sew that in the same way I did the ribbon along the cut, and by hand as before.
Pour commencer il s'agit de déterminer où les poches doivent se trouver sur le ruban, pour qu'elles se retrouvent sur les côtés de la taille, et marquer l'endroit à l'aide d'une épingle (n'ayant pas mon matériel je n'avait pas d'épingles à disposition et ai utilisé des aiguilles à la place).
First thing is to do to mine where the pockets should be sewn on the ribbon in order to be on the sides.
Il faut ensuite positionner correctement la poche à l'intérieur du ruban.
Then the pocket you need to be put inside the ribbon at the right place and pinned there.
Il ne reste plus qu'à coudre les différentes épaisseurs de tissus ensemble.
Then I sewed the different layers of fabrics together.

Puis, il ne reste qu'à fermer le ruban sur lui-même là où il n'y avait pas de poche.
The only thing left to do is to close the ribbon on itself where there was no pocket.
Je me suis rendue compte que les deux côtés du ruban n'avaient pas exactement la même longueur et ai donc découpé celui qui était plus long. Le morceau restant était certes petit, mais il m'a inspiré.
As i realised that not both sides of the ribbon were of the same length, I cut the longer one. The piece left was small, but it did inspire me.
Je me suis dit : « Ça serait parfait pour faire un genre d'embout pour éviter que l'extrémité du ruban s'effiloche. ». Aussitôt dit, aussitôt fait !
I thought: 'this will be perfect to make some kind of a tip which will stop the far end of my ribbon to fray.'. And that was done !
Il ne me restait plus qu'à fixer mes deux embouts, et mes poches étaient terminées.
The only thing left to do was to fix those two tips and my pockets were done.

How historically accurate is it? Historicité : eh bien le travail est entièrement fait à la main, le tissu est 100% lin donc ça c'est histo. Par contre le fil c'est du fil "vintage" de coton donc c'est pas tellement l'époque. Pour ce qui est des techniques, très honnêtement je n'en ai aucune idée. Je dirais 90%.
Well, it's all hand-made and the fabric is 100% linen, but then my thread is "vintage" coton thread which i don't believe is period-correct. About the techniques i have no idea how historically accurate they are, if at all. I'd said on the whole it's 90%.

First worn: Pas encore porté, en partie parce que le reste de la tenue n'est pas dispo pour le moment.
